Five impactful books every great leader needs on their bookshelf

At HR Star, we’re constantly honing and developing our perspective on the world of work to be able to help companies to improve their people processes and, subsequently, drive business growth in the best possible way.

CIPD training is of course a key to our continued education, but so too is the media we choose to consume even outside of work – and we’ve been reading some particularly useful leadership books of late.

Never ones to keep solid advice to ourselves, here are five of our favourite recent reads, which we encourage anyone who is looking to reach their full potential as a leader to check out for themselves:

  1. Start with Why by Simon Sinek

Author and inspirational speaker Simon Sinek delves into one of life’s most profound questions: why?

Sinek explores ‘why’ as a way of thinking, emphasising that if more organisations and people prioritise ‘why’ over what’, more people will feel fulfilled by the work that they do.

  1. Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg

In Lean In, technology executive, philanthropist and writer Sheryl Sandberg shares her personal stories, and uses research to shine a light on gender differences, and offers practical advice to help women achieve their goals.

The book challenges you to change the conversation from what women can’t do, to what they can do, and serves as a rallying cry for everyone to work together to create a more equal world.

  1. The Chimp Paradox by Professor Steve Peters

If you want to better recognise how your mind is working, understand and manage your emotions and thoughts, or manage yourself and become the person you’d like to be, this book is for you.

The Chimp Paradox explains different aspects of how you function and highlights key facts for you to understand, and includes exercises to develop emotional skills and practical habits to become a better you.

  1. Happy Sexy Millionaire by Steven Bartlett

This book bills itself as a crucial intervention for a society heading in the wrong direction, offering a new way to live in the modern age.

Author and entrepreneur Steven Bartlett dismantles the most popular, unaddressed lies about happiness that we’ve been led to believe, and replaces them with a practical set of scientifically proven and unconventional ideas that will help you to live a life full of the love you seek and the success you deserve.

  1. Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business by Gino Wickman

Last but not least, Gino Wickman’s Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business is an invaluable guide on how to strengthen your business.

Read this and you’ll discover simple yet powerful ways to run your business – all of which promise to give you and your leadership team more focus, more growth and more enjoyment.
